Description
Crafted in the fledgling days of Spice Route, the 2001 Flagship Syrah marked a bold new chapter for Swartland wine.
Grown in the rugged red soils of Rheeboksfontein, Malmesbury, where dryland vines and cool sea breezes shaped a vintage of rare intensity, this Syrah was picked at peak ripeness and matured in French oak for 16 months. Bottled unfiltered, as was the house style, it captured the raw purity of place and time.
Now, over two decades later, it stands as a powerful time capsule. Inky ruby in colour, with lifted aromas of smoky bacon, black fruit, and exotic spice. The palate is dry, dark, and deliciously evolved—vibrant still, with firm structure and a long, expressive finish.
Awarded Silver at the 2003 International Wine Challenge, 91 points by Wine Spectator, and 4½ stars in Platter’s Guide, this vintage has aged with striking poise. A benchmark bottling for collectors, storytellers, and Syrah lovers alike.
